Morven leads fresh fight on feral pests

Landholders in and around Morven gathered on Thursday to collect 1.3 tonne of poisoned meat to help eradicate feral pigs, foxes and wild dogs.

The program funded by South West NRM and the Murweh Shire Council will help destroy feral animals across about one million acres in the Morven District.

Murweh Dog Advisory Group chair Tim Williams said the program involves a lot of volunteer hours from the landholders putting the meat out and getting the meat from the Wild Dog Advisory Group.

"We are trying to devastate the feral pig population and it will kill cats, foxes and wild dogs," Mr Williams said.

"You get the whole lot of it in one baiting which is a terrific outcome because they are all pests to the environment and to the landholder.

All the work is unpaid and completely voluntary and it's a big job for them but I think they deserve a bit of thanks which they don't often get."

Murweh Shire Council workers Erron Heinemann and Jason Thompson put 1080 poison into the kangaroo meat used for baiting supplied by South West NRM.

"It is outside of our normal wild- dog baiting program. It has come at a good time because everything has dried out and pigs are heading back to watering holes," Mr Heinemann said.

Charleville wild dog officer Jim Miller was also there to lend a hand and give landholders some advice.

"I'm out here today to help out and talk about co-ordinated dog management," Mr Miller said.
