AUSTRALIA'S economy may no longer be on the sheep's back but there were encouraging signs at Wednesday's ram sale at Mt Ascot north of Mitchell.

The Brumpton family had 80 single lots of merinos for sale and 12 lots of three.

Roma Elders branch manager Keith Crouch was delighted with the outcome.

"It was a very strong sale considering the weather and the situation with dogs," Mr Crouch said.

Property owner Nigel Brumpton said the rams were well-presented on a cooler day.

"We were lucky with the heat today," Mr Brumpton said.

"Many of our neighbours got some rain last night and we had showers over Christmas that got us out of jail."

Market expert Maurie McNeill said the demand for sheep was very strong.

"There is plenty of confidence around with the forward market moving with the present market," he said.
