Brown snake slides to Karingal

AN UNWELCOME visitor was spotted at Karingal Nursing home at the weekend.

A brown snake was sighted at the entrance of the facility, forcing staff to ramp up their awareness to ensure the snake didn't find its way inside.

The snake didn't enter the building, but with the electronic sliding doors opening slightly longer than regular ones to accommodate the elderly, there was an opportunity for the slippery serpent to slide inside and make itself at home.

Darling Downs Hospital and Health Service western operations manager Karen Abbott said in a statement standard procedure was followed when the snake was sighted.

"Standard process was followed which included an onsite inspection and the erection of signs warning visitors and staff of the sighting," she said.

"Snake sightings at our rural facilities are not unusual this time of year.

"Our staff are experienced working in rural facilities and understand the standard process that needs to occur with snake sightings."

With high temperatures recorded over recent weeks, including two 38C days over the weekend, snakes may be more active and looking for cooler areas to take refuge.

A number of residents have expressed concern to the Dalby Herald in recent months that there is no licensed snake catcher permanently stationed in Dalby.

Anyone is able to apply for a licence to legally relocate snakes but at present, the only snake catcher who services Dalby is in Chinchilla.

Snake stats
