TREATED stormwater from the Bunnings Warehouse construction site in Ruthven St is being discharged directly into Gowrie Ck.

Toowoomba Regional Council confirmed that a pipe running under the site was taking storm water from Ruthven St and the Bunnings site and discharging it into Gowrie Ck.

Planning and Development chairman Cr Chris Tait said the council had received a development application for the new Bunnings' site at 239 - 267 Ruthven St on December 5, 2015.

"As part of council's development approval for the new Bunnings' site a stormwater management plan was implemented that involved discharging the treated stormwater to Gowrie Ck through a pipe," he said.

He said prior to the development of the site, stormwater was previously discharged to Gowrie Ck from Ruthven St through a series of pits and pipes running underground.

"Council continues to work with residents and developers to ensure Gowrie Ck can continue to play the important function of capturing stormwater runoff for properties throughout the Toowoomba CBD."

Bunnings Warehouse general manager, property Andrew Marks, said in a written statement stormwater management at the site had been designed in accordance with the council and authority guidelines.

The Chronicle also asked Bunnings how the water was treated to ensure it was environmentally sound and why the water was discharged into the creek.

Mr Marks said he understood the builder was currently working within the approvals and permits as issued by the authorities.
