THE heatwave battering southern Queensland has put the region's farmers into survival mode.

Lockyer Valley Growers president Michael Sippel said while it wasn't peak growing season for most farmers at the moment, some crops were impacted by the heatwave.

Temperatures hit 38 degrees in the Lockyer Valley yesterday and are set to remain in the mid to high 30s over the next  few days.

"If you stood out in this heat for a few days you won't like it either," Mr Sippel said.

"Some farmers are starting to plant broccoli and cauliflower and keeping water up to those crops is hard.

"Some pumpkins are getting quite sunburnt, you need a sheer amount of water to pour on them to keep them cool."

Mr Sippel said while the Darling Downs had received some rain from storms in recent days the Lockyer Valley had missed out.

"The storms have been going around us," he said.

"It's very frustrating, it's not good or ideal, but it could turn around in a week and we'd be back in business.

"Everyone is in survival mode right now, keeping water up to the crops they have and hoping the temperatures will turn."

The mercury hit 36 degrees in Toowoomba yesterday, but will drop down to 30 degrees on Saturday.
