MUCH of the pre-match talk going into the Sharks v Bulldogs game yesterday centred on how NSW State of Origin hopefuls, the Bulldogs' Josh Reynolds and Cronulla's Todd Carney, would perform.

But it was Canterbury halfback Trent Hodkinson who showed up both in his side's 24-8 win in front of a small crowd of 10,131 at Bluetongue Stadium.

It was the former Manly playmaker's high kick that led to his side's first try after 16 minutes, with winger Sam Perrett leaping above his opposite Nathan Stapleton to put the ball down.

Hodkinson also played a part in Mitch Brown's second try which put Canterbury up 18-8 after 61 minutes.

A nice combination from the No.7 and Frank Pritchard down the short side put Brown over, with Ben Barba's first try assist of the year seeing the winger score his first after 34 minutes.

The Sharks trailed 12-8 after 47 minutes, after a nice Luke Lewis ball saw Wade Graham break the line, before Lewis backed up to score.

But Brown's double, and also Perrett's second of the afternoon, after intercepting a Carney pass in the 73rd minute, sealed the Bulldogs' second win of the year.
