HOLY COW: Inflatable animal used in New Acland protest

IF POLITICIANS in Brisbane missed the 250-strong crowd marching outside their door, they couldn't ignore the giant cow.

Anti-coal protesters marched on Parliament House yesterday to reject the expansion of the New Acland Coal Mine, after it was defeated in the Land Court in June.

A giant inflatable cow was the centrepiece in a stunt designed to put pressure on Mines Minister Anthony Lynham.

Acland farmer David Vonhoff said the arguments against the mine were overwhelming, and had been vindicated by the decision from tribunal member Paul Smith that the effects on groundwater were too damaging.

"I can't run my farm without groundwater and the Land Court found that the Acland mine puts our groundwater at risk," he said.

"The Land Court also confirmed that this farming country here is amongst the best 1.5% of agricultural land in Queensland, and it's ridiculous to destroy that with a coal mine."

President of farming and community group Oakey Coal Action Alliance Paul King agreed.

"We can't understand why the Queensland Government has failed to act on the Land Court recommendation," he said.

"It's now been two months since the Land Court judgement, and the delay is causing extreme uncertainty and distress for local farmers.

"We're calling on the Premier and the Minister for Natural Resources and Mines to respect the law and reject this  mining project without any further delay, and then to act to protect the Darling Downs from mining permanently."

Dr Lynham said he had to make a decision on New Acland by the end of January next year, but could announce its approval or rejection before that date.
