Kmart wishing tree spreads cheer to families in need

THE Salvation Army's Erica Paynter wishes everyone could see people's faces when they receive gifts from Kmart's wishing tree.

The Kmart Wishing Tree Appeal is in its 30th year, with more than 380,000 gifts donated nationally last year.

The gifts are donated to members of families in need, with the help of the Salvation Army.

"It's awesome. Their Christmas would be very bland without the gifts," community engagement worker Ms Paynter said.

It will be the first year of the wishing tree for Grand Central's Kmart, which launched its appeal yesterday.

Wishing tree "champion" Liam Hopkins was keen to jump on board.

"Some families may not be able to support their children with gifts - that is what we do," he said.

"We step in and collect gifts, we collect donations and we support people who don't have it as fortunate as us."
