Lockyer Valley by-election declared

LAIDLEY businessman Rick Vela has won the Lockyer Valley Regional Council by-election. 

Mr Vela quickly streaked ahead of his opponents during counting at the weekend, leading by 800 votes on Monday morning.

After two days of counting with minimal change in Mr Vela's lead, the Electoral Commission of Queensland has declared him winner of the by-election.

Mr Vela, a jeweller by trade, finished on 3692 votes, ahead of his closest rival Mark Newton (2923 votes), and third-placed Brett Qualischefski (2891 votes).
