THE return of Mick and Matt Newell motivated some teams and discouraged others in tonight's five-way cook off on My Kitchen Rules.
Melbourne's Sam and Chris were eliminated after losing their sudden-death cook off against the Tasmania father-son duo.
"I think when Mick and Matt walked back in the boys got a bit deflated," Dan Mulheron said.
"I think it took the wind out of them."
The two Queensland teams, Sunshine Coast siblings Jake and Elle Harrison and Hervey Bay couple Dan and Steph Mulheron, won tonight's amuse-bouche challenge, where they had to create a bite-sized dish.
The Mulherons said they were initially shocked at the second chance given to the Newells, but that it motivated them to work harder.
"It was what we needed," Dan said.
"In the Top Four you become a bit complacent. Mick and Matt amped us up a bit more."
As the two lowest scoring teams, Sam and Chris and Mick and Matt had to plate up their signature meal.
Dan said the Newell's experience in Comeback Kitchen seemed to make all the difference.
"I was actually a little bit jealous of what they'd done (in Comeback Kitchen)," he said.
"They were like a different team.
"We couldn't believe how good they were."
Sam and Chris's elimination means there is a 50 per cent chance at least one Queensland team will make it through to the final.
It would be the first time a Queensland team has cooked in an MKR grand final since Brisbane's Veronica and Shadi Abraham won the first series in 2010.
The Mulherons will cook off against personal trainers Luke and Scott in tomorrow night's semi-final showdown, which will determine the first team through to Sunday's grand final.
Then the Harrisons will cook against the Newells on Wednesday night.
My Kitchen Rules finals week continues tomorrow at 7.30pm on Channel 7.
