Plans to redevelop top tourist locations

WESTERN Downs Regional Council has received a grant of up to $200,000 to develop masterplans for four popular tourist destinations across the region.

The grounds surrounding the Chinchilla Weir, Lake Broadwater, Caliquel Lagoon and bike trails in the Bunya Mountains are all on the list for new masterplans.

In April, the council applied to the Department of State Development, Manufacturing, Infrastructure and Planning for strategic planning for tourism infrastructure funding.

Mayor Paul McVeigh said the Western Downs was working to position itself as a destination people travelled to for authentic rural experiences.

"We want to optimise the places of interest to tourists across the Western Downs, as well as bringing in new business and encouraging confidence in our diverse economy," he said.

"To do this we need to invest in tourist spots, along with events and points of interest within the region.

"The Chinchilla Weir grounds is just one good example of this.

"Lake Broadwater is very popular with the locals for picnics, swimming, skiing and boating activities - depending on seasonal water levels - so we could look at things like improving accessibility to the water."

Council said the plans may include new or improved amenities and camp sites, picnic areas, tour development, non-motorised water sport opportunities and improved connectivity.
