A ROMA police officer found to have caused a grandmother's death after performing a highway U-turn has been dismissed from the Queensland Police Service.

The QPS in a statement this morning said Constable Fabio Armando Mazza had been dismissed from the service after  the conclusion of an internal investigation.

It follows his conviction on one count each of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing grievous bodily harm last year, and a failed appeal earlier this year.

"In keeping with our commitment to high standards of behaviour, transparency and accountability, we have undertaken to inform the public when an officer faces serious allegation of misconduct," QPS said in a statement.

Mazza was sentenced to two years wholly suspended after he was found guilty on the charges relating to a May 2014 fatal crash on the Warrego Hwy near Wallumbilla.

An investigation found Mazza was travelling at 98kmh when his speed detector locked on to a vehicle travelling the other way at 110kmh.

Steven Smith and his wife Gail were riding a motorbike behind Mazza. When the constable slowed, veered to the left, then pulled right, causing the Smiths to crash.

Mrs Smith died and her husband was seriously injured.

Mazza appealed the Roma District Court jury's verdict, arguing the 12 members should have included the possibility that an overreaction from Mr Smith caused the crash, and that the verdict was unreasonable.

But the Queensland Court of Appeal said Mazza tried to disparage the evidence from a person travelling behind the Smiths.
