L-plater in $250 car fined $1600 after traffic offences

DRIVING a car worth only $250 has cost a man $1600 in the Hervey Bay Magistrates Court.

Jeremy James Graham got off to a bad start to his driving career, with the L-plater pleading guilty to five offences which took place on April 4 in Sunshine Acres.

These offences included driving an unregistered, uninsured vehicle with incorrect number plates, while not complying with learning requirements and not displaying his L plates.

Police prosecutor Senior Constable Nicole Kunkel said Graham was intercepted by a police patrol about 4.30pm that day, after the officers noticed the car on Maryborough-Hervey Bay Rd near the Booral Rd intersection.

They ran a check on the vehicle, which revealed it had another car's number plates and was unregistered and uninsured.

The officers intercepted the car as it turned on to Park Ave and found Graham to be the driver with one passenger, Snr Const Kunkel said.

Graham had bought the car for $250 about two to three weeks before the offences, and he knew the car was unregistered, Snr Const Kunkel said.

Snr Const Kunkel said Graham chose to drive that afternoon to pick up his girlfriend from a friend's house.

Magistrate Graham Hillan said he would not record a conviction, due to Graham's previous lack of traffic history.

Graham was fined a total of $1600 for all five offences.
