Spin twins could be the key in Davis Shield game
CRICKET: Warwick spinners Riley Doherty and Shaun "Robbo” O'Leary could hold the key in the Davis Shield game against Stanthorpe at Mayhew Oval on Sunday.
With Stanthorpe not in the Davis Shield competition this season, the game is for pride and the Bourke Hendry Trophy - one of two up for grabs this weekend in Warwick.
The game will be a great hit-out for Warwick, which has Davis Shield games against Toowoomba and Lockyer next month and needs to win at least one to have a chance of again making the final.
With the withdrawal of Sean Bryson and Jared Fearby from the Davis Shield team, O'Leary unselfishly suggested that Warwick needed another specialist batsman in Mitchell Shield.
He offered to drop down from Mitchell to Davis shield so Michael Bourke could boost the batting stocks in the top team.
Bourke has been at national cricket with daughter Lucy but will be home tonight so can make it to the Mitchell Shield game.
He has been in good form this season with a recent 80 to his credit.
O'Leary has a five-wicket bag to his credit in Davis Shield and will bowl leg spin, possibly in tandem with young Wheatvale off-spinner Riley Doherty.
Paceman Tyhe Clarkson took 6-9 in club cricket last Saturday so is one of the in-form bowlers in the Warwick team.
Captain Dave Walker said this week that Duane Lihou had worried Warwick over the years in Mitchell Shield with his pace bowling.
It is expected Lihou will play for Stanthorpe in Davis Shield on Sunday at Mayhew Oval in what will be a young side from the Granite Belt.
